Do you drive and own a car in Thailand? Car insurance prices can be much higher so it’s worth searching a little bit before buying or renewing. The cheapest car insurance is the only one you must compulsory buy. It’s called “compulsory third-party liability insurance” "CTPL" and you can find it from 645.21 baht depending on the type of vehicle you drive. This is a fixed price set by the Thai regulators and insures the very basic coverage.

As for the comprehensive motor insurance, the premiums differ across the insurance companies. First thing you should do is to compare what is available in the market. There is a bunch of good tools available online like www.gluaygluay.com could be a good reference. They offer both online and telephone support with more than 15 good brands on their panel. Here are a number of well-known car insurance companies in Thailand: Krungthai Panich Insurance, Chartis, Muangthai, Bangkok Insurance, LMG, Allianz CP, Thaivivat, MSIG, Tokio Marine, Viriyah, Syn Mun Kong, KSK Insurance, Siam Commercial Samaggi, AXA, Mittare etc.

Motor Insurance in Thailand

In Thailand, there are 2 main categories of motor or car insurance.

Compulsory Insurance

This is the basic insurance required by law. Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI or Por Ror Bor) covers the medical costs of road accident victims and does not cover any kind of vehicle damage. It is required to have a CMI policy in order to be able to renew your yearly vehicle tax.

Voluntary Insurance

You are strongly advised to purchase voluntary cover, which comes in 3 main classes;
  • Class 1: Known as full comprehensive insurance, covers vehicle, life and injury of driver, passengers and third party property damage and liability.
  • Class 2: Known as collision coverage will cover the repairs to vehicles when involved in an accident.
  • Class 3: Covering life and injury of driver, passengers and third party property damage and liability.
Ever since the massive floods in 2011, many non-life insurers came up with packages with the inclusion of flood coverage.
